While my mother suffered the devastating effects of Post-Polio Syndrome in the last years of her life, we accumulated a vast number of medical supplies and equipment needed to care for her. When the day came that mom was no longer with us, we still had the daunting task of trying to figure out what to do with all the supplies and equipment that were left.
We talked to local senior centers and some were willing to take a few items but commented that they had very little storage. Many had already run out of storage space. I spoke with donation centers and they would gladly take smaller items but were reluctant or refused to take larger items. Often, a smaller item such as a walker will stay on their inventory for a while and if is not taken or purchased, then it ends up being thrown away. Items such as power chairs, patient lifts, and hospital beds are very difficult to donate to such organizations due to their lack of storage space or fear of not being able to get rid of the items.
There are many individuals that have a great need for these very things. But for many reasons those in need may be unable to get these items, whether due to insurance related issues, financial difficulties, or just a lack of resources available to them to assist in getting them the equipment they need. As an Occupational Therapist, I know firsthand how important the right medical equipment can be to improve an individual’s safety and well-being.
After much research, I found that there is a tremendous need for used medical equipment in our community but there is not an organized way of matching the individual in need with a donor. Recycled Blessings is a program in which used medical equipment can be donated to All Blessings Flow. The program collects, recycles, organizes, and distributes donated, used medical equipment. We refurbish the equipment and through our network, find someone in need of that exact item. With the help of local churches, senior organizations, medical personnel, social workers, as well as neighbors and friends, we can take items that once blessed you or your loved one with safety and well being and pass along that blessing to someone else in need.
